Artwork Details

  • Artist: Charles Marion Russell (1864-1926), often called "America's Cowboy Artist".
  • Original Medium/Date: The original work was an oil painting completed in 1914 (though some prints were dated 1916).
  • Description: The painting dramatically depicts a cowboy on horseback and a pack horse on a steep, narrow mountain trail. The lead horse has spotted a grizzly bear hidden in the bushes and is recoiling in fear, demonstrating the old Western saying that the horse's superior sense of smell and instinct for danger is more reliable than a human's eyesight.
  • Original Location: The original painting was purchased by silent film star William S. Hart and has primarily resided at the William S. Hart Museum in California.

Dimensions: 14" H x 18" L.
