Description:
Fine coastal seascape painting by noted American marine painter William Trost Richards (1833–1905) depicting rolling Atlantic waves breaking along a rocky shoreline. The composition captures the rhythmic motion of the sea under a soft sky, with distant landforms visible along the horizon. Richards was widely celebrated for his highly detailed and naturalistic depictions of the American coastline, particularly scenes from Rhode Island and the New England shore, where he spent considerable time studying marine environments.

The work is signed “Wm. T. Richards” at the lower right and is presented in a substantial gilt frame bearing an artist name plaque. A gallery label from William Vareika Fine Arts, Newport, Rhode Island, on the reverse identifies the work as “Sachuest Point, Middletown, Rhode Island.” Richards’ seascapes from this region are among his most desirable subjects and exemplify his ability to render atmospheric light, wave movement, and coastal geography with exceptional precision.

Richards was associated with the Hudson River School and American Pre-Raphaelite movement, and his marine paintings are held in major museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
