This color photograph captures a young Swahili man in Lamu, Kenya, wearing a traditional embroidered kofia cap. Lamu, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlements in East Africa, known for its unique blend of African, Arabic, and Indian cultural influences. Beckwith and Fisher have spent over 40 years documenting the diverse visual heritages of the African continent, focusing on the preservation of traditional identities and sacred ceremonies.
