A handsome pair of French Louis XVI-style bergère armchairs featuring tall rounded upholstered backs, enclosed upholstered sides, padded armrests, and loose seat cushions. The chairs are upholstered in a deep burgundy-brown floral damask velvet accented by brass-tone nailhead trim. Painted wood frames feature molded and carved detailing, scrolled arm terminals, and straight fluted tapering legs characteristic of Louis XVI seating. The reverse of each chair is finished with contrasting striped upholstery. Comparable period Louis XVI bergères employ painted frames, enclosed upholstered sides, loose cushions, and straight fluted legs.
While the form is consistent with late 18th-century French Louis XVI bergères, the photographs alone do not provide enough evidence to conclusively date these examples to the 18th century, so I would catalog them conservatively as “Louis XVI Style” unless maker’s marks, construction details, or provenance confirm the period.
