September 11 memorial “Flag of Honor” American flag designed by John Michelotti as a tribute to those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The red and white stripes are formed from the printed names of the victims, transforming the American flag into an individual memorial to those who perished.

Michelotti conceived the Flag of Honor after the attacks and, with his wife, compiled the victims’ names before working with his graphic-designer nephew to incorporate them into the American flag design.

The Flag of Honor includes the names of those who died at the World Trade Center and Pentagon and aboard American Airlines Flights 11 and 77 and United Airlines Flights 175 and 93. The project distinguishes it from the related “Flag of Heroes,” which specifically honors fallen emergency first responders.
