An exceptional mechanical singing bird automaton in full working order, originally purchased at Tiffany & Co. in New York City. This heirloom-quality piece features a vibrant bird with iridescent natural plumage perched on a silk-leafed crossbar. When the mechanism is engaged, the bird performs a fluid sequence: rotating its body, flapping its wings, and opening its beak in perfect synchronization with a clear, rhythmic birdsong.
The domed cage is constructed of finely crafted gilt-brass with a ring-top suspension. The heavy, high-relief repoussé base is decorated with elaborate scrolling foliate and floral motifs, characteristic of the premier European makers of the era, such as Bontems or Karl Griesbaum. The internal clockwork and bellows have been exceptionally well-maintained, producing a crisp acoustic tone. This piece represents the intersection of luxury NYC retail history and the pinnacle of European mechanical horology.
