Description: An exceptional original woodcut by the renowned philosopher and art critic Arthur C. Danto, dating from his prolific but brief period as a printmaker (c. 1950s–1960s). Titled "Maiden" in the lower left and signed "a. Danto" in the lower right, this work is a quintessential example of Danto’s "painterly" approach to the woodblock.

The portrait depicts a female figure rendered with a sophisticated balance of delicate facial features and aggressive, architectural gouging. Danto’s style bridges the gap between the raw intensity of German Expressionist woodcuts (reminiscent of Kirchner or Schmidt-Rottluff) and the gestural freedom of American Abstract Expressionism. Printed in rich black oil-based ink on textured, semi-translucent handmade paper, the work possesses a commanding graphic presence. As Danto famously abandoned his art practice in 1964 to revolutionize the field of aesthetics, his surviving prints serve as a vital link between his creative output and his later philosophical theories on the nature of art.
