An original collection of eight historical black-and-white World War II press photographs documenting the historic Potsdam Conference (codenamed the "Big Three" meeting) held in Potsdam, Germany, from July 17 to August 2, 1945. The images offer candid, close-up glimpses of major world leaders and key military figures during the high-stakes summit, including U.S. President Harry S. Truman, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin, and British Prime Minister Clement Attlee.
Five of the photographs feature their original typed descriptive captions stamped in purple ink on the reverse, explicitly credited as "Official U.S. Navy Photographs" issued by the Navy Department Office of Public Information in Washington, D.C. The remaining three photographs are blank on the reverse.
The individual captioned scenes include:
File Number 49918 (Released July 16, 1945): "Their First Meeting" – Documenting an informal visit by Prime Minister Churchill to the little "White House," where he had lunch with President Truman. The photograph captures the President waving goodbye to the Prime Minister.
File Number 49925 (Released July 16, 1945): "A Lighter Moment" – Capturing President Truman enjoying an amusing incident with sudden laughter during a visit to Generalissimus Stalin's residence inside the conference area, with Russian Ambassador Andrei A. Gromyko visible to the far right.
File Number 49927 (Released July 16, 1945): "Churchill Leaves The Little 'White House'" – Showing the British Prime Minister leaving the temporary American residence with his daughter, Mary Churchill, following a visit with President Truman.
File Number 700202 (Released August 2, 1945): "Big Three" Resume Sessions – Depicting President Truman, Generalissimus Stalin, and Britain's new Prime Minister, Clement Attlee, posing for photographers on July 29, just before the conference room was cleared for business.
File Number 49991 (Released July 16, 1945): "A Quick Tour of Berlin" – Showing President Truman riding in a star-marked open staff car during a brief tour of the city on the morning of the conference, passing a bombed-out building.
