An original collection of eight historical black-and-white World War II press photographs documenting the 1945 Potsdam Conference (codenamed the "Big Three" meeting) held in Potsdam, Germany, from July 17 to August 2, 1945. The images offer firsthand views of major allied leaders and military personnel during the summit, featuring U.S. President Harry S. Truman, British Prime Minister Clement Attlee, Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin, General George S. Patton, and General Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Six of the photographs feature typed descriptive captions or handwritten notes on the reverse, with several explicitly credited as "Official U.S. Navy Photographs" issued by the Navy Department Office of Public Information in Washington, D.C. The remaining two photographs have handwritten identifications.

The individual reverse notations include:

  • File Number 700078 (Released July 28, 1945): "The President Attends Flag Raising Ceremonies At Berlin" – Capturing President Truman attending a special flag-raising ceremony along with General Dwight D. Eisenhower (left) and General George S. Patton (center). The caption notes that this specific flag was the same Stars and Stripes that flew over the Capitol in Washington on December 7 and 8, 1941, when war was declared.

  • File Number 700137 (Filed August 2, 1945): "New Prime Minister Inspects Honor Guard" – Depicting newly elected British Prime Minister Clement Attlee inspecting his honor guard, formed by the Scots Guards, at his temporary residence at "Little No. 10 Downing Street" in Potsdam.

  • Handwritten Note 1: "James Byrnes, President Truman, Stalin & interpreters, Potsdam July 17, 1945" – Accompanying a candid image taken during the opening phase of the conference.

  • File Number 49990 (Released July 26, 1945): "The National Anthem" – Showing the President reviewing troops as the Second Armored Division band plays the National Anthem. The Presidential Unit Citation was presented to the division by President Truman during the ceremony.

  • File Number 700110 (Released July 31, 1945): "Formal Photographs" – Documenting the "Big Three" posing for a formal portrait seated in a garden near the meeting place on July 25, 1945.

  • File Number 700124 (Filed August 2, 1945): "End of a Busy Day" – Capturing President Truman at the airport following a full day of military troop inspections in the Frankfurt area. Before leaving, the Commander-in-Chief presented four British and Canadian officials with the Distinguished Service Medal, shown here standing with Gen. Eisenhower and the President.

  • Handwritten Note 2: "Marshall Stalin & President Truman, Potsdam Conference, taken July 17, 1945" – Identifying a key meeting photo from the start of the historic summit.

  • File Number 49985 (Released July 26, 1945): "President Truman Tours the German Capital" – Detailing President Truman's tour of the outskirts of Berlin between conference sessions, where he inspected the Second Armored Division and presented them with a Regimental Unit Citation.
