Overview

This intricate work is a prime example of contemporary Cuban surrealism by Eduardo Expósito. Eschewing a formal title, the piece centers on a monumental, weathered human foot that serves as a literal foundation for a dreamlike architectural structure. The artist utilizes the toenails as windows into miniature worlds, including a detailed eye and a reclining figure, creating a narrative of "the body as a site of memory."

The upper register depicts two figures in profile, reminiscent of Renaissance cameos, engaged in a silent dialogue. They are entwined with scrolls featuring Latin legal and philosophical maxims: "Perpetuum rei memoriam" (In perpetual memory of the matter) and "Audi alteram partem" (Hear the other side). Expósito’s mastery of line and the use of a muted, earthy palette of olives and ochres give the work an aged, monumental quality.
