Etruscan Bronze Figure, ca. 6th–5th Century B.C.
A tall, elongated Etruscan bronze anthropomorphic figure, cast with the highly stylized proportions characteristic of early Italic votive sculpture. The figure stands in a frontal pose with a slender, tapering body, narrow waist, and elongated legs, the silhouette accentuating an elegant verticality typical of Archaic Etruscan bronzes. The arms are attenuated and angular, one bent akimbo at the hip while the opposite extends downward, a posture often interpreted as a gesture of ritual offering or invocation.
The head is abstracted, with subtle facial modeling softened by age and patination, surmounted by what appears to be a simplified cap or hair mass. The surface exhibits a rich mottled green and brown patina, consistent with ancient burial and long-term oxidation. The figure is mounted on what appears to be its original or early rectangular bronze base, retaining traces of encrustation and mineral deposits.
This type of elongated votive statuette belongs to a well-documented tradition in central Italy in which worshippers dedicated bronze effigies to deities in sanctuaries, particularly those devoted to fertility, healing, and local protective gods. The exaggerated proportions—long neck, narrow torso, and stylized limbs—reflect a distinctly Etruscan aesthetic that differs from contemporary Greek naturalism, favoring instead abstracted geometry and spiritual presence.
Condition: Surface wear, encrustation, and stable patina throughout;
Provenance:
From a private collection (details can be added if you have them).
Note: At 24 inches, this is a large example, as most votive bronzes range from 4"–12". Monumental votives of this size are scarce on the market and were likely associated with high-status sanctuary offerings.
