Description

This is an authentic, finely engraved antique map of Europe, titled "Europa, ad magnae Europae Gerardi Mercatoris P. imitationem". It was drawn by Rumold Mercator, Gerardus Mercator's son, and published as part of the very first "atlas"—a term coined by Mercator himself. This specific map is the scarce first atlas issue from the 1595 posthumous edition of Atlas sive Cosmographicae Meditationes, published in Duisburg.

Key Details:

  • Cartographers: Gerardus Mercator (original concept) and Rumold Mercator (engraving).
  • Projection: Utilizes the revolutionary Mercator projection, which was groundbreaking for maritime navigation as it allowed sailors to plot straight-line courses.
  • Aesthetics: Features typical Mercator elegance with meticulous lettering, detailed engraving of topography, and an ornate strapwork title cartouche at the bottom right.
  • Historical Significance: This map includes the mythical island of "Frisland" south of Iceland, a common feature on maps of the era based on the Zeno brothers' accounts.
  • Rarity: Issues from the first publication run (pre-1606, before Jodocus Hondius acquired the plates and made revisions) are considered scarce on the market.

Condition:
The work is in good overall condition, which is to be expected with a map of this age. It appears to have contemporary or original hand-coloring. Potential minor imperfections or foxing/mottled marks may be present. We recommend reviewing all accompanying images for a comprehensive condition assessment.

Dimensions: 21 inches high by 27 inches wide.
