Description:
This detailed, framed print is a historic bird's-eye view map of the Connecticut towns of Essex, Centerbrook, and Ivoryton, originally published in 1881 by the prolific mapmaker O.H. Bailey & Co. of Boston. These unique, non-photographic perspective maps were a popular cartographic form in the late 19th century, offering a charming aerial view of the community's street patterns and buildings.
The map includes a detailed index (or reference list) to points of interest and several individual vignette illustrations of significant local landmarks and businesses of the era below the main image. Notable locations on the original map included Hills Academy, the Saybrook Savings Bank, and the Comstock Cheney & Co. Ivory Factory.
The original lithograph is in the public domain and housed in the Library of Congress collections, making this a faithful and attractive reproduction.
