Lot Description

This evocative East Asian painting depicts a gathering of Arhats (disciples of the Buddha) in a serene mountain retreat. The composition is divided into two distinct groups of figures engaged in scholarly and spiritual activities. On the left, the "Laughing Buddha" Budai (Hotei) is seated prominently with his characteristic exposed belly and hemp sack, accompanied by figures examining a handscroll and a whisk-bearing attendant. To the right, a second group of figures, including a high-ranking monk with a gnarled wooden staff and a sutra-bearer, are shown in mid-conversation.

The work is executed in a traditional blue-and-green landscape style, utilizing fine "iron-wire" brushwork for the robes and expressive, individualized facial features. The background features mist-shrouded peaks and craggy rock formations typical of Zen-inspired iconography. The piece exhibits natural signs of age, including light foxing and minor pigment wear, consistent with a historical work. It is presented in a modern wood frame with a neutral mat.
