Description

This is an exquisite and finely decorated Canton Famille Rose "Rose Medallion" porcelain punch bowl, dating to the late 19th century (Guangxu Period, ca. 1875–1908). The bowl is a premier example of Chinese export ware, featuring a vibrant "Gold Ground" (Mandarin) style characterized by dense floral scrolls and butterflies set against a rich gilded backdrop.

The exterior and interior are divided into alternating scenic and botanical panels. The scenic cartouches depict detailed "Courtly Life" compositions with figures in traditional Qing Dynasty attire engaged in domestic and social activities. The botanical panels showcase the classic "Bird and Butterfly" motif, featuring the titular pink peonies (the "Rose" of Famille Rose) and lush greenery.

The underside bears an apocryphal six-character iron-red seal mark reading Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi ("Great Qing Dynasty, Qianlong Period Make"), a common mark of honor used during the late 19th-century revival of high-quality export porcelain. The bowl sits upon a custom-fitted, hand-carved dark wood lotus-petal display stand.

Dimensions: H:7.5in D:16in

Condition: Excellent antique condition. Minor expected rubbing to the gilt rim and internal enamels consistent with age and use. No visible chips, cracks, or restorations.
