The design is inspired by the architecture of Roman temples, featuring a barrel crafted from genuine fine marble and a skeletonized cap in 750 solid gold. The cap is engraved with the first verse of Horace’s ode to Maecenas, and the gold cap ring features the inscription "Gaius Cilnius Maecenas." The cone is finished with a replica of an ancient Roman coin depicting Maecenas, and the clip is forged in the shape of a Roman gladius. The 18k gold nib is detailed with an engraved laurel wreath and the Roman numerals MMXI.
