Large Greek Corinthian Black-Figure Oinochoe, Archaic Period, ca. 600–575 B.C.
A monumental Ancient Greek Corinthian Black-Figure Oinochoe (Wine Jug) dating to the Archaic Period, circa 600–575 B.C. This exceptionally large Greek pottery vessel features multiple registers of black-figure animal friezes, including lions, panthers, goats, birds, and sirens, executed with fine incision and added red and white pigment typical of Middle Corinthian workshops.
The tall, elegant body with a single high-arched handle and dramatically flared mouth is characteristic of Corinthian oinochoai, a form used for pouring wine and ritual libations. The vase is decorated with dense rosette fillers, a hallmark of Corinthian ceramic painting of the 7th–6th centuries B.C.
The scale of this example—21 inches tall—places it among the largest Corinthian oinochoai known in private hands, rivaling the size of pieces held in major institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Getty Villa, and the British Museum. Its presence and silhouette evoke museum-quality Greek Archaic craftsmanship.
The vessel displays a rich, aged patina with mineral deposits and expected surface wear consistent with burial and antiquity. The black glaze of the neck and mouth retains strong color, while the body shows well-preserved animal figures across three wide registers.
