Corinthian / Etruscan Black-Figure Amphoriskos (or Small Amphora), ca. 600–575 B.C.

A large and elegant Corinthian black-figure amphoriskos, decorated with richly detailed animal friezes typical of the Middle Corinthian period. The vessel displays a bulbous body, twin loop handles, and a thickened rim, each element painted in black slip and enhanced with added red pigment.

The body is encircled by a procession of lions, panthers, goats, birds, and sirens, each executed with incised internal details and framed by the characteristic Corinthian rosette fillers—a key diagnostic element for dating. The upper frieze consists of repeated rosettes and floral motifs, while the lower border features alternating pointed petals and black-filled sections, grounding the composition.

Despite notable surface wear, including scattered losses to slip and pigment abrasion, the animals remain clear and expressive, with added red pigment still visible on several figures. The handles are intact, and the vessel maintains its strong, globular profile.

This vessel is larger and more sculptural than typical amphoriskoi, which generally measure 6–9 inches. At 12 inches tall and 8 inches in diameter, it stands at the upper end of Corinthian production, making it a desirable display piece for both antiquities collectors and interior decorators.

Height: H:12in D:8in

Condition

Some surface wear with areas of slip loss and encrustation; expected abrasions from burial; rim worn; no visible major restorations or reassembly from photographs. Handles intact. Structurally sound.
