Description

An authentic and well-preserved leaf from a medieval Latin Bible manuscript (Biblia Latina), hand-produced on fine animal vellum (parchment) in France, circa 1300. This fragment is a superb example of a Gothic-era "pocket Bible" leaf, a style popularized for private study and portability in the 13th and 14th centuries.

The text, written in a clear gothic minuscule script in two columns of approximately 56 lines, contains passages from the Old Testament, likely related to the Book of Maccabees. The leaf features several expertly executed hand-painted initials (rubrication) in alternating red and blue ink, with intricate, delicate pen-work flourishes that extend into the margins, a hallmark of Parisian artistry from this period.

Condition: The leaf is in very good antiquarian condition, with strong, legible script and vibrant initial colors. Commensurate with its age of over 700 years, there is minor toning and natural cockling typical of vellum, as visible in the images.

  • Origin: France (Paris region likely)
  • Date: c. 1300 A.D.
  • Medium: Ink and pigment on animal vellum/parchment
  • Text: Latin Vulgate Bible (Old Testament, Book of Maccabees)
  • Script: Gothic Minuscule book-hand
  • Dimensions: H:18in L:16in

Condition report: The vellum shows age-related waviness, toning, and spotting consistent with its age. There is visible wear along the edges, small losses, and surface creasing. Ink remains legible throughout with decorative elements still present. The frame exhibits surface wear and patina consistent with age. Overall condition is consistent with an antique manuscript leaf.
