Antique Meissen porcelain figural group titled The Capture of an Infant Triton, depicting a lively mythological scene rendered in finely modeled porcelain. The composition features a standing female figure holding a fishing net that ensnares a small infant triton, while another seated female figure and playful cherubs interact around the net. The figures are arranged atop a naturalistic base decorated with shells, sea life, and aquatic vegetation, emphasizing the marine theme.
The sculpture is executed in the highly detailed Rococo style associated with Meissen porcelain, with expressive faces, fluid poses, and finely modeled drapery. The standing female figure wears a pink draped garment accented with a jeweled clasp, while the seated companion and cherubs are portrayed with naturalistic forms and soft hand-painted coloration. The intricate netting, marine elements, and dynamic movement throughout the composition demonstrate the technical skill typical of Meissen’s figural works.
The underside bears a blue crossed swords mark and impressed model number, consistent with Meissen production, along with additional collector notation. Scenes drawn from mythology and allegory such as this were popular subjects for Meissen figural groups during the 18th and 19th centuries.
