An extraordinary and highly important antique West African hand-carved steatite (soapstone) figure, traditionally classified as a "Nomoli" (or Pomdo) artifact, primarily associated with the Mende, Sherbro, and Kissi peoples of Sierra Leone and Guinea. Unearthed from ancient burials and agricultural fields, this monolithic figure depicts a stylized kneeling or seated ancestral entity with its hands clasped beneath a heavy, bearded chin. The prominent head showcases classic stylistic hallmarks including bulging, heavy-lidded almond eyes, a wide flaring nose, thick lips, and a high, tiered or textured conical headdress. The porous, eroded soapstone surface exhibits an authentic, deeply weathered gray-brown patination and mineral encrustations gathered from centuries of subterranean preservation. The sculpture comes mounted to a modern black wooden display block.
