This striking Southeast Asian cast bronze sculpture depicts a partial torso of a standing Buddha, heavily influenced by Sukhothai or Ayutthaya stylistic traditions. The figure is modeled with characteristic serene elegance, featuring an oval face, gently downcast eyes, a subtle meditative smile, and elongated earlobes. The head is crowned with tightly curled hair knots rising to an ornate, flame-like ushnisha (spire), symbolizing spiritual enlightenment.
The Buddha is depicted wearing a sheer, clinging monastic robe (uttarasanga) with a long, decoratively folded sash draping over the left shoulder and cascading down the reverse. His right hand is raised in the Abhaya mudra, the gesture of fearlessness, protection, and peace, while the left arm extends gracefully downward along the hip. The bronze surface displays an authentic, nuanced dark brown patina with mottled areas of green verdigris encrustation. The sculpture is mounted on a modern black wooden presentation stand with a central metal support rod.
Medium: Cast bronze torso on a wooden and metal museum mount
Dimensions: 35 x 13 x 8 inches (Overall on stand)
Condition: Fragmentary as cast or due to historic preservation; intentionally missing the lower legs and structural portions of the lower torso. The bronze exhibits a rich antique patina with scattered oxidation, minor pitting, and surface wear consistent with age and long-term display.
