Apulian Greek Plain Ware Jug (Oinochoe / Chous Form), South Italian, Magna Graecia, ca. 350–300 B.C.

A small but well-preserved Ancient Greek South Italian (Apulian) Plain Ware jug, dating to the Late Classical / Early Hellenistic Period, ca. 350–300 B.C. This form, with its wide globular body, single handle, and flaring rim, is typical of domestic Apulian vessels used for pouring wine, oil, or water in daily life.

The surface displays characteristic iron-rich red slip bands applied to the rim and body — a hallmark of utilitarian pottery in Magna Graecia. The clay fabric, shape, and painted bands align strongly with Apulian household ceramics found across ancient Southern Italy.

Although undecorated compared to the region’s red-figure or Gnathian wares, Plain Ware jugs are valued today for their authentic archaeological simplicity, their role in ancient daily life, and their ability to complement more ornate examples in collector displays.

This piece is fully intact with a well-preserved handle and foot, exhibiting only minor surface wear from burial.
