Corinthian Black-Figure Oinochoe / Etruscan, ca. 6th Century B.C.
A fine Greek Corinthian black-figure oinochoe, richly decorated with multiple animal friezes executed in the classic Middle-to-Late Corinthian style. The globular body is painted with a procession of lions, panthers, goats, and birds, all rendered with incised details and added red and white pigments, now partially worn from age.
The upper register features scrolling rosettes and stylized floral motifs arranged in dense patterning, while the lower frieze continues the animal parade—an iconic hallmark of Corinthian pottery. The animals are shown in profile with energetic postures, framed by repeated rosette fillers which help date the vessel to approximately 600–550 B.C.
The trefoil mouth is broad and flaring, with heavy mineral deposits and surface wear from burial. The elegant, curved handle terminates in a rounded knop at the rim. The surface shows substantial but stable wear: areas of paint loss, encrustation, and abrasion consistent with ancient ceramic surfaces that have remained uncleaned or minimally conserved.
This is a large example—11 inches tall, which is noticeably bigger than standard Corinthian oinochoai (usually 6"–9"). Large-format pieces with full animal friezes are increasingly scarce on the market and desirable to collectors of Archaic Greek pottery.
Dimensions: H: 11 inches, D: 6.5 inches.
Surface wear throughout; abrasion and pigment loss consistent with burial; small areas of overpaint from old collection restoration possible; no visible major breaks or reassembled areas from the images provided. Trefoil mouth worn, but intact.
